Our story

A taste of Ethiopia, grown close to home

Arada brings the soul of Ethiopian and Eritrean cooking to Lenexa — slow-simmered wots, sizzling tibs and generous combination platters, all torn and shared over spongy injera. Our kitchen is rooted in two beliefs: that real food starts with real ingredients, and that a meal is meant to be shared.

That's why all of our produce is organic and locally sourced from nearby Kansas farms, while our berbere, mitmita, niter kibbeh and other signature spices are imported directly from Ethiopia — blended the traditional way for the deep, aromatic flavor you simply can't fake. Nothing is rushed, nothing is artificial; just honest cooking made with care.

Step inside and you'll find a colorful, candle-warm dining room where families gather around a single platter, the aroma of fresh-roasted coffee drifts through the air, and there's often live music and easy conversation. We serve dine-in, takeout, delivery and curbside — but our favorite way to eat is together, slowly, the Ethiopian way.

Made to share

Every meal arrives on one platter of injera, meant to be torn and enjoyed together.

ሰላም · Selam — welcome

Rooted in Ethiopian tradition

Every plate carries centuries of ritual — from the spices we toast by hand to the way we gather around one shared platter. This is more than a meal; it's gursha, the loving act of feeding a friend.

Eat with your hands

Meals arrive on a single round of tangy, fermented injera that is both plate and spoon. Tear a piece, scoop the stews and share — no utensils, just good company and a loved one who may offer you gursha, a bite by hand as a sign of affection.

The coffee ceremony

Buna · ቡና

The coffee ceremony

Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, and the ceremony is its heartbeat. Green beans are roasted over coals, ground fresh and brewed in a clay jebena, then poured in three rounds — Abol, Tona and Baraka — an invitation to slow down and stay a while.

Toasted by hand

Toasted by hand

The warmth in our wots comes from berbere — a deep-red blend of chili, fenugreek and cardamom — melded with niter kibbeh, a spiced clarified butter. These are the building blocks that give Doro Wot and Key Wot their unmistakable soul.

The rituals behind the food

At Arada we serve traditional Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine — meat and vegetarian stews (wots) and sautéed dishes (tibs), all served on fresh injera. Whether you dine in, take out or order delivery, every meal is built to be shared.
